Science in Your World Family Night" is February 27 in the social
hall. The Brookfield Parent Association is sponsoring this fabulous
event in which the students and their families will be involved
with some amazing science activities from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. A big

the students of Brookfield School. Your efforts are appreciated
by all.

Mid-Year Open House
T hank
you to all who came to Brookfield's Mid-Year Open House. What a
fantastic turnout! I am so pleased that the students were able to
share their work with their parents. Isn't it amazing how much the
students have accomplished from September to February? And we still
have the rest of the school year for more dynamic learning! Thank
you parents, for showing your support and interest. Our fantastic
teaching staff works very hard to make sure your child has a terrific
education. Open House is a time when you can see results of all
the energy that the students put into their schoolwork. You are
able to read about the Open House highlights of each classroom in
the Brookfield Buzz,
the great newspaper written by Brookfield's student journalists.
You can also read reflections from some of our third graders in
the fourth term newsletter.

Scholastic Book Fair
A big thank you goes to Mrs. Jeri Michelson who is
in charge of the Scholastic Book Fair. She
and our wonderful parent volunteers will be in the Social Hall November
20 - 22 assisting our students with their book selections. Mrs.
Michelson and the Scholastic Book Fair team worked late November
19 setting up the displays. This is such a great opportunity for
our students to be able to select books here at the school. Parents
are also welcome to browse and purchase books.
The Brookfield staff would like to sincerely thank
all the generous and thoughtful parents, students and book fair
staff who helped to make our book wish lists come true. Thank you
all so much!

Heritage
Day
We had a great time seeing different costumes on Heritage
Day, November 14. Thank you Mrs. Darwish for coordinating
this event! Students changed into costumes at noon, and the student
body tried to guess the heritage of the clothing that was worn.
It was fabulous to see beautiful clothes that represent many different
nations in the world. Appreciation
goes to Mrs. Darwish and Mrs. Robin Wong for having their cameras
to capture some great pictures for the yearbook. To view a complete
photo gallery of all the great cultural dress, go to the student
created Heritage
Day page.

After School Art Program
The Brookfield Parent Association is again offering an After School
ART Program. The program will begin September 19th and continue
through to near the end of the school year. Mollie Morrison will
continue to teach the classes. Mollie is an experienced artist and
trainer. If you would like to see some of Mollie's work, you can
visit her website.
She is very excited to be returning for her second year with the
BPA Art Program. Deborah Frank, who assisted in last year's program,
is returning this year to assist Mollie with the classes. She helped
to organize the pilot program in 2000.
The one-hour per week sessions will include discussions of artists,
art history, art elements, principles of design, specialized techniques
and, most important, hands-on projects. Near the end of the school
year, students will again host an ART show for their parents and
school staff.

Odyssey of the Mind
Brookfield has decided to bring Odyssey of the Mind back to the
school. This program is being sponsored by Brookfield Parent Association
(BPA) and coordinated by Vice President Renee
Carter. Odyssey of the Mind – or OM as it is known – is a creative
problem-solving team project, which includes a short-term and long-term
problem. The team consists of five to seven members who compete
with other teams at their level. Along the way, the team learns
responsibility, the value of teamwork, and how to expand their creative
thinking skills. OM isn’t entirely new to Brookfield. Brookfield
students placed 1st in the California State Finals in 1992, 1st
in the California State Finals in 1993, and 2nd in the California
State Finals in 1995. Last year, the BPA took a survey and found
interest in bringing OM to Brookfield again. Students who are interested
in joining a team may go to the office to get information about
the program.

Letter from the Director 2002-2003
Dear Students and Parents/Guardians:
Welcome to a new school year! This 2002-'03 school year will be
fantastic! Please make sure you read the information contained in
the folder your child brought home the first day of school. The
Student/Parent handbook should be read
as a family so that everyone is aware of Brookfield's policies.
There are a number of forms that need to be signed and returned
to school:
1. Agreement to abide by Brookfield procedures and rules
2. Two emergency information forms
3. Release for photo publication
4. 8:15 morning choral music participation with Mr. & Mrs. Clinger
Students participating in the following programs:
5. Early/late child care form
6. Instrumental band or string participation
We will certainly be starting the year off with music! Students
will have an opportunity to hear about the instrumental music program
on Friday, August 30 at 9:30. Mrs. Karanuka and Ms. Kutzer will
explain the various instruments to the students. The week of September
3, the choral music program begins each morning at 8:15. There is
no extra fee to participate in this music program. The students
learn so much and have such a good time singing and dancing. Please
look over the music sheet to determine which day(s) your child's
grade level will have instruction.
Due to Mr. & Mrs. Clinger's great instruction, the Brookfield senior
choir will have the opportunity to represent the State of California
and sing in Canterbury England next summer. What an honor! Last
year, only six schools in the United States were invited to participate.
Additional information will be forthcoming.
On Tuesday, September 3 the students will be able to see an assembly,
"Math, Music & Sound" that was recently developed by Mr. Phil Tulga.
Last year's assembly with Mr. Tulga was such a hit with the students.
I am sure they will enjoy and learn how math is such an important
component in music.
Grade levels "Back to School"
meetings for parents will be forthcoming and will be held in
September. Welcome back everyone to Brookfield's 41st year.
Sincerely,
Loretta Ashizawa, Director

Summer 2002 Letter
from the Director
Dear Parents/Guardians:
I hope you are having a terrific summer with your
family! I am hearing about different family activities, and it sounds
as though everyone is quite busy with travels, visiting family and
friends, camps, sports, and enrichment classes. School was officially
over May 30th, but Brookfield students kept on learning. Even though
Camp Invention was cancelled at the last minute, the alternative
Camp Brookfield the first week in June, turned out to be a huge
success. Under the direction of Mrs. Hoover and Mrs. Renaud, students
experienced language arts, student led plays, science, and art activities
coupled with games, movies, p.e. and walking excursions. Thank you
Mrs. Hoover and Mrs. Renaud for a great week!
The eighth grade trip to Ashland Oregon for the Shakespeare
Festival was fantastic. According to Ms. Hansen, she, students,
and parents had an awesome time! Everyone enjoyed going to the plays
and having a backstage tour of the theater. Having read and discussed
some of Shakespeare's classics and doing a term paper on this famous
author during the school year enhanced this culminating trip.
Graduating fifth graders spent three days at Marin
Headlands seeing the tide pools and learning about the wild life
in this scenic area. Appreciation goes to Mrs. Wendy Saunders and
the parents for making this trip possible for the students.
Students have returned from their sixteen days trip
to France. With Madame Stiehr's expertise of the language and country,
the students truly got to practice their French and see the sites
and experience the culture of France. Madame Stiehr said this was
one of the best France trips she has taken with students. We are
so glad that everyone had such a marvelous time and arrived home
safely.
We have a new upper grade math and science teacher,
Mrs. Melanie De Marco! Mr. Johnson retired at the end of last year.
Mrs. De Marco and her husband have moved to the Sacramento area
from Los Gatos. She has a daughter who attends college in San Diego.
Mrs. De Marco majored in middle school math education in New Hampshire
and has taught at the middle school and elementary school levels.
Since 1998 Mrs. De Marco has taught at a private school in San Jose.
She has carefully reviewed various textbooks and we have ordered
new math texts for the middle school grades. She is also looking
at the science materials and curriculum so our students can have
an invigorating and successful year. Please welcome her to Brookfield.
Reminder: Monday, July 29 from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00
p.m. Sue Mills Uniform Co. will be in the multi purpose room for
students to try on and purchase clothing. Parents may purchase
uniforms rather than do mail order. Do online or phone orders as
soon as possible: 1-888-269-8400. The Sue Mills Co is at the Almond
Plaza Shopping Center 7216 Regional Street, Dublin, Ca. 94568. (925)
560-0360. Should you purchase from another company, the pants and
shorts (over) must be twill material and look as though bought from
Sue Mills.
Only middle school students have the option
to wear red or white polo shirts (with no logos) and navy blue or
khaki pants, shorts, and skirts. Sixth graders are now considered
to be part of the middle school; therefore they may have this option
to wear this attire. When buying socks, please remember that they
must be visible, i.e. no low-rise socks. Socks need to be
a solid color (girls, red, navy, or white; boys, navy or white).
At the end of last school year, the Brookfield Parent
Association (BPA) informed me that the used clothing sale would
not be available at the beginning of the school year. However, Mrs.
Tipton, this year's BPA president is interested in restarting the
program. She will have more information at the BPA's coffee for
parents on the first day of school, August 28, at 9:00 in the multi.
Parents can order uniform sweatshirts, sign up to be BPA members,
room parents, and meet other fabulous Brookfield parents. All parents
are invited to this morning event!
Brookfield does not endorse many companies; however
the KIDS I.D. SYSTEMS came in the mail and I wanted to share this
product with you. Brookfield's lost and found becomes inundated
with many lost sweatshirts, fleece jackets, sweaters, etc!
There are so many items with no names that the iron-on cloth identification
seemed wonderful! Since the students wear uniform items, it is very
difficult to return an article of clothing to the owner if there
is no identification. And rest assured, it would be absolutely terrific
if a forgotten jacket or sweatshirt could be returned to the students
rather than sit in our lost and found. There may be other companies
that provide similar products of iron-on identification. I have
enclosed the order form for your interest. Please remember to label
all items, including lunchboxes and backpacks. Thank you.
Please do remember that if you mention Brookfield
School when making purchases at Target or via the Internet that
uses School Pops agreement such as the Gap, Barnes & Nobles, Sharper
Image, Amazon.com, etc, the companies will donate a certain percentage
to the school. We have used those monies to purchase items for the
computer lab.
Again, instrumental music, as an enrichment class
will be available. Violin - must be 1st grade or older, viola -
6th grade or older, band instruments (clarinet, flute, oboe, saxophone,
snare drums, trumpet, trombone - 4th grade or older. Information
and sign up will be sent home after school has started. Choral music
classes will begin the week of September 3rd; information on grade
level morning days will be sent home the first day of school. Sign-ups
for the after school art classes, sponsored by the BPA will be sent
in September.
First Day of School: 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, August
28. We'll see everyone then!
Sincerely,
Loretta Ashizawa, Director
