Term Five 2002-03
Dear Parents/Guardians:
What an amazing fifth term! Brookfield students have
been extremely busy and productive! Our middle school students did
a fabulous job with their science projects for Brookfield’s First
Science Fair on March 20. Our students’ works are so impressive.
A lot of time and effort went into these scientific projects that
had the hypothesis, procedures, and results. The students are commended
for their fantastic science display and reports. Five judges scored
the Science Fair Projects. Everyone did such an outstanding job,
resulting in high scores so there are multiple winners.
First Place:

Another Brookfield showcasing event will be the Art
Fair tomorrow, Thursday, April 10 in the multipurpose room
from 5:30 - 7:30. Please come and see the artistic talents of our
students who participate in the after-school BPA sponsored art program.
Seventh grade students also have an art period scheduled during
the day, once a week, in their curriculum. Their work will also
be on display in room 15.
As you read in the Brookfield
Buzz, our third and fourth grade Odyssey of the Mind Teams
did well in their placement in the regional contest. The fourth
grade team placed fourth; and our third grade team placed first
with additional recognition of getting the Omer Award for exemplary
behavior and outstanding team cooperation. It was a delight for
me to see how well our students performed at the Regional Competition.
Terrific! On April 3, there was a fabulous photo and write-up in
City section of the Sacramento Bee about our third grade team Last
Saturday, April 5, our third grade team went to Visalia for the
State Competition and although they did not place, it was a great
experience. Congratulations to Johnathon, Chaney, Blake, Kim, Hayley,
Dylan and Ross for an outstanding job and representing Brookfield
so well! We are so proud of all of you! Appreciation go to their
supportive parents and Coaches Lynn Cone and Mr. Bob Westmore.
Our seventh graders did a fabulous job being vendors
for the French Market Day! What a treat it was for our entire
student body to go “shopping” in the multi, speaking French while
visiting each store, participating with an activity or sampling
their wares. Thank you seventh graders for providing the various
stores: apparel (Jillian), candy (Arima), toy (Alexis), beauty salon
(Rebekah), pastry (Sonja), and café (Christine).
Our fifth through seventh grade students entered the
National French Poster Contest. This year’s theme is “Celebrate
French-Speaking Countries”
Our semi-finalists in the Fifth -Sixth Grade Group:
Katherine
Lauren Ma
Taryn
Seventh Grade:
Sonja

Congratulations to all for their terrific efforts!
The National winners will be selected in May.
Accolades go to seventh grader Rebekah. Her
poem has been selected as one of most creative submissions and is
in the Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans.
Another poet is sixth grader Lauren Ma. Her poem was
selected as one of the “Top Ten Poems” in the fourth -sixth grade
division in the Young Poet Contest. Lauren won a $50 check to purchase
a savings bond and a free copy of the anthology from Creative Communication.
Katie Rose, sixth grade student is performing in the
Crockett-Deane Ballet “The Story of Noah’s Ark.” at Sacramento High
School Auditorium on Saturday, April 12 at 7:00pm and Sunday, April
13 at 2:00. Have fun Katie Rose.
It is the time of year when some of our parents begin
planning summer activities for their children. There is an interest
survey in this bulletin for Camp Brookfield. Please fill
out the form and return it to school by April 16 so Mrs. Hoover
can see how many parents are interested in having their child participate
in a week of activities June 2-6, and perhaps June 9-13, if there
is enough interest.
This term’s focus has been on the MegaSkill effort.
The following are statements that have been read to the student
body.
Effort is the heart of a human. Without effort, nothing
could be accomplished. No job would be worked to its fullest. Effort
is going the extra mile, and not just doing the minimum, or taking
the easy way out. When you have worked hard on homework, you used
effort. When you’re done with all of your homework, aren’t you glad
that you’re done and now you can rest? You use effort in sports.
You need energy and concentration. So next time you do something,
remember effort so you will do your best.
By Alex, Sixth Grade President
Effort is how we get chores done and how we finish
our homework. If you don’t make an effort, you probably won’t get
good grades on tests or on your report card. By making an effort
you are trying your very best to study, to be helpful when there
are chores to be done, and to help others when they are in need.
If no one had ever made an effort, then the Declaration of Independence
would never had been made and there wouldn’t be the United States
of America. Because someone made an effort to establish a new country,
we can be free to do almost anything we want to do. If no one made
an effort, the world would be a pretty boring place, so when you
are studying, remember to put a little effort into it.
By Jillian, Seventh Grade Vice President
Here are some thoughts by our Pre-First students.
Effort means being willing to work hard…. I give my
best effort by listening to other people when they’re saying something.
By Patrick
I give my best effort by being wise.
By Elena
I give my best effort by doing my math on my own.
By Jennifer
I give my best effort by helping other people in different
classes.
By Tariq
I give my best effort by helping a neighbor that’s
very old.
By Stefan
I give my best effort by cleaning my room.
By Serena
I give my best effort doing whatever my mommy and
daddy tell me to do.
By Natalie
Third grade students had to write a composition
on likenesses and differences.
My Dog and Cat
My dog and cat are alike in some ways. They both always
are literally begging for affection. Both of them have a teeny bit
of snow-white fur. My dog and cat can’t stop themselves from running
around the house. They’re mentally insane when we pull up in the
driveway. They are both very frightened of each other. Both of them
try to gobble up each other's food like they’re robot programmed
to eat. My dog and cat are also very different. My dog is a first-class,
complete wimp, but my cat on the other hand, is as bold and brave
as a cadet in battle. My dog’s name could’ve been Mr. Protect Your
Family And Love Them, because he is so protective and loving to
us cat is independent, and will whack you if you walk by her. My
dog is very patient and as nice as Clara Barton, but my cat has
a very bad temper, and always gives you bad looks, unless of course
you’re giving her affection. My dog likes to play all the time like
a 9 year old at a soccer game, but my cat is lazy except when we
come home. My dog is obedient and willing to do tricks, but my cat
does what she wants, whenever she wants, no matter what you do.
I like that my dog and cat are alike and different, because it’s
easier for me to love them that way, than if they were completely
alike or different.

My Brother and I
My baby brother and I are alike in many ways. My brother
and I have very big eyes. We are very fast runners. We like fun
ball games such as ball tag. We also like collecting rare Yu-Gi-Oh
cards, too. We like three colored hamsters, too. That is how we
are alike in many ways. My baby brother and I are different in many
ways. I like to play tennis, but he likes to play basketball. I
like shoes that are colorful. Somehow, my brother likes giant sandals.
My hair sticks up a lot of times, but my brother’s hair stays down
. I like nice new You-Gi-Oh, but my brother likes bent, torn, and
old Yu-Gi-Oh cards. I have extremely bad eyesight, but my brother
has good eyesight. That is how we are different in many ways.

My Sister and I
My sister and I are alike in many ways. We both have
light brown hair. Each of us has a dog and we both adore animals.
She and I both share a love for the countryside and enjoy music
and dancing very much. But, we’re still annoyed with our little
brother. My sister and I are different in many ways, too. I’m nine,
she’s fourteen. Our eyes are different. I have dark brown eyes,
but she has light blue eyes. We live in different places, too. I
live on the sunny side of California in a small, two story house
in the suburbs of Sacramento. On the other hand, she lives on the
snowy side of Washington State in a large two story home. I have
one animal, but she has seven. She has a big brown horse, but I
do not. That is how we are alike and different in many ways.
