BROOKFIELD NEWS
Term Four 2002-03
Dear Students and Parents/Guardians:
Thank you to all who came to Brookfield's Mid-Year
Open House. What a fantastic turnout! I am so pleased that the students
were able to share their work with their parents. Isn't it amazing
how much the students have accomplished from September to February?
And we still have the rest of the school year for more dynamic learning!
Thank you parents, for showing your support and interest. Our fantastic
teaching staff works very hard to make sure your child has a terrific
education. Open House is a time when you can see results of all
the energy that the students put into their schoolwork. You are
able to read about the Open House highlights of each classroom in
the Brookfield Buzz,
the great newspaper written by Brookfield's student journalists.
In order to have students gain in their academics,
they must be present at school. Please make sure your child is at
school on time, to gain the necessary instructions from the teacher.
Please schedule vacations during the school holidays and whenever
possible, medical appointments after school. We realize that some
illnesses necessitate appointments during school time. Although
students make-up the work because of absences, doing "catch-up"
assignments is not the same as when students are able to hear and
see the lessons presented by the teacher. The teachers are able
to clarify and add important information to topics, present lessons
utilizing a variety of strategies to promote better understanding,
have class discussions so students can hear their peers' ideas which
assist students to formulate and refine their own thoughts. It is
difficult for a student to get the information in the classroom
situation just by reading the textbook. When you know your child
will be out of school for a few days, as a courtesy to the teachers,
please tell them at least three days in advance. Although the teachers
are not under any obligation to provide work in advance for vacation
absences, they will often do so and feel less pressure when they
know in advance. Please refer to pages 5 & 6 in the Parent
and Student Handbook regarding attendance, make-up work and
tests. Thank you for your cooperation.
Please make sure you come to "Explorit's Science in
Your World Family Night" tomorrow evening, February 27 in the social
hall. The Brookfield Parent Association is sponsoring this fabulous
event in which the students and their families will be involved
with some amazing science activities from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
What are the thoughts of third
graders? Here are some writings about the MegaSkill, Teamwork and
their reflections about Open House.
Teamwork is important to my class at Brookfield School.
If you were playing basketball and someone didn't pass the ball,
they would not be having fun and they would not have a chance to
shoot. Teamwork is not about winning, so you shouldn't play something
to win, you should do it to have fun. If I was reading to you and
you were not paying attention to me or left, I might have hurt feelings
or feel that I did something. Teamwork is not all about games and
activities; it's also about friendship. Let's say that we were talking
and you ran away. I would be hurt and that would be rude. Teamwork
is really for games and friendship.
By Chaney
Teamwork is important to my class at Brookfield School.
It is important because what if there was a project you had to do
with some other people and everyone was working their hardest but
one person did very sloppy work? Some situations for teamwork would
be: at P.E., in Odyssey of the Mind, at school, and even at home.
In P.E., you use teamwork to play games. In O.M. you use teamwork
to answer problems. At school, you use teamwork to do projects and
school work. That is how you can use teamwork.
By Kimmy
Teamwork is important to my class at Brookfield School.
The way my class and I use teamwork is listening to Mrs. B. in the
classroom. Another way is at P.E. we always try to get our teammates
in the game. We always participate in an art project, and don't
just scribble. We listen to teacher's orders to grow up and be very
important. We always make a new kid feel at home. That is the way
to use teamwork.
By Alexander
Teamwork is important to my class at Brookfield School.
Teamwork is important because it makes my class happier. Teamwork
means working together. When you are doing a project together and
somebody is not doing what is right and everybody else is they are
not showing teamwork. You should use teamwork every day. At P.E.
you should always use teamwork. Teamwork also means cooperating
with your team members. Always use teamwork.
By Crestley
Teamwork is important to my class at Brookfield School.
When we play P.E., we must use teamwork to have fun, not just to
win. Besides, who cares to play if you're not trying to have fun?
My class uses teamwork at other places, too. In our class, we also
use teamwork because we respect each other while we learn. If someone
was talking while the teacher was trying to teach a subject, it
would not be fair to other students. My class uses teamwork when
we are kind. I f someone is mean, it is hurting the team. That's
the way my class uses teamwork.

Last night was Open House and I loved it! First stop,
my classroom, of course. I first looked at the silhouettes and the
"I Wish Poetry." Next, we looked at the library, my favorite part
of the classroom. Wow, I see some "Very Unusual Animals!" My favorite
was the Leptictidium. It lived over 40,000,000 years ago!!! Still
to come, the traveling Flat Stanley. I got 2 post cards and a packet
of information. My favorite thing to do, so grab a partner, it's
the tile games. Oh, by the way, grab a sheet and a bucket of tiles,
too. Don't stop there; we still have the book reports to see! They
were all fabulous. The drawings were bright and the stories were
so mysterious! Do I sound like that? It's the speeches and the Turkey
Parade. Hi, Pishy! Yum! Mrs. Bee made "Bee" cookies! Hey, I found
myself in the scrapbook! Our Mega important skill, teamwork! How
many cups in one pint? It's our measurement helpers! I see candy,
but it's guarded by frogs?! Posters galore (for math). Now, it's
off to the computer lab. Hi Mr. B! I open my folder, and we begin.
I have 2 documents, 1 publication, and 1 stack. My mom was amazed!
While my mom talks to Mrs. Miller, I play in the social hall with
Kim. Bye!

Open House was a fun night! When we arrived at the
parking lot, it was full of cars! We went to the Social Hall first,
got some lemonade, drank it, and saw the missions done by the 4th
grade and a video by Mrs. A. Then we went to the computer room (computer
is my favorite subject), and my parents and sister looked at my
work, including Hyper Studio, my typed "Wish Poem," and acrostic
poem, a picture with describing words (adjectives), and my Columbus
Quest publication. Then we went to my classroom, which is third
grade, looked at the scrapbook, and my penmanship, which my father
was amazed at. He said that my penmanship was actually improving!
I showed my mom the Third Grade Rules, which we say every day with
the Pledge of Allegiance. Next, we looked at one fourth grade, which
had a biography of someone. They only have 14 people in the class.
They also had things about the missions with outlines, introductions,
and pictures of inside the mission. They also had CDs with names
on them. We went to the second fourth grade and they had the same
CDs as the other fourth grade. One of the students (Paige) had a
box that said something about a teacher. She also had a notepad
and people wrote their names on them and put them in the box. In
the fifth grade, the people had biographies of themselves on their
desks. They had state reports in the multi purpose room. I looked
at the cover, and one was made on Jan. 21, 2003. We went to the
multi-purpose room to see the state reports. They had sample stuff
to eat, I tried some chips. My parents, sister, and I went to Mr.
Wong's room. We saw erosion, and moon craters. He teaches science
and math in a room for the 5th, 6th, and 7th grades. We saw Madame
Stiehr's room and my dad and mom tried some French wine. A sign
said that the French eat a lot of fat. The Japanese don't . They
both suffer less heart attacks than the British and Americans. Conclusion:
Speaking English kills you. We went to the first grade and looked
at the stuff. They had some Chinese New Year stuff. They also had
Chinese writings. Finally, we saw the 2nd grade. it was fun looking
at their work, like how cactus grows. That was what I did on Open
House.

This year, Open House at my school was the best. Open
House is where all of the parents come and look to see what their
child or children are doing. Kids also come to see what other kids
are doing. This year I made a measurement person. It had blue hair.
I think my dad liked it a lot. I also showed my mom the silhouettes.
I thought mine was the 3rd best in the class. My mom and dad saw
the Flat Stanley map. I showed my parents the video that showed
the speeches we did. My mom liked seeing the French names of kids.
Then it was the best time, computer time. I showed my mom and dad
what I am doing in the computer lab. I showed them all sorts of
stuff. Then I went to the Social Hall to get some lemonade to drink.
While I was drinking my lemonade, I watched a movie. But last but
not least, I went to the multi-purpose room to look at all the different
state reports. In fact, one kid brought a real live lobster. Then
it came time to leave because it was 8:00. I wish I never had to
leave, but sometimes you have to do things you don't want to do.
I loved this Open House a lot.

Last night was open house at Brookfield School. We
got there ten minutes early and the parking lot was almost full
already. I got there about 15 seconds later than my friend, Alex.
First we went into my 3rd grade classroom. We started at one end
and went all the way around the classroom. I showed my parents our
metric and standard system posters and our measuring people which
help us remember how many pints are in a quart and so on. Then we
watched my speech. My mom and dad both thought I did wonderfully
on it. Then my dad looked at my mystery book report since my mom
had already seen it. We looked at the Flat Stanley postcard and
my mom read the postcard that my great uncle wrote. We looked at
the unusual animal poster, and my mom and dad thought that the whole
class did a great job on the poster. Then I showed them our Mad
Minute clubs, and my mom was amazed that I could do 40 math facts
in a minute. I showed them the silhouettes that we cut out, and
the poems that we did with them. Next, we went to the computer lab.
I showed my parents my Kid Profile, where you interview another
person. My mom was really impressed with all the buttons I made
on it. I showed them the other things that I did and they were also
impressed by those. Finally, we went to the Social Hall to look
at the missions. We saw the Santa Barbara mission, and we had been
to that one before! There was one made out of legos, and one that
had a roof made out of gum. We also got some lemonade and a cookie.
I can't wait until the next Open House, not only to have a good
time, but also to show off to my parents.

Last night our school had Open House. There were so
many things to look at. First, I went to my classroom, the third
grade. Before doing anything else in the classroom, we watched some
of the biography speeches. Second, we went to the I Wish Poems,
and silhouettes at the back of the room. Third, we went to the Flat
Stanley area and I showed my family all the letters and postcards.
Fourth, we went to the balance and I weighed things. Then we looked
at all the charts and I showed them the French stuff. Finally, we
went to the unusual animal speeches and the mystery book reports.
The next classroom we went to was the computer lab. I showed my
family all of the projects we've been doing. They were surprised
at how much I've done. Next, we went to the fourth grade to see
some of the things we were going to do next year. There was a television
for their mission speeches. We looked all around their classroom.
After that we went to the Social Hall and got lemonade and my whole
family got a chocolate chip cookie. Then we went to where the video
was playing of P.E., friends, and other activities. We also looked
at the pictures on cardboard. Last, but not least, the best of all,
we looked at all the missions. Then we went home and Chaney got
a piggy back ride with my sister half the way and I got a piggy
back ride the other half. Open House was the best day ever!!!!!

We have some creative students in Odyssey of the Mind
(OM). A drawing contest for the Capital Gold Region's OM t-shirts
was held and one of our Brookfield's team won! Coached by Lynn Cone,
applause go to our creative artists: Chaney, Johnathon B., Blake,
Kimmy, Hayley, Dylan and
Ross.
Our fourth grade Odyssey of the Mind team, coached
by Mrs. Miller, consists of the following students: Aditya, Chelsea,
Shelby, Lindsay, Kathleen, Ian, Abby. The Odyssey of the Mind Competition
will be held Saturday, March 15. We will definitely be rooting for
our Brookfield teams to do their best with the problem solving and
creativity activities. Keep up your great thinking! We are so proud
of you for your efforts! Thank you, BPA, for sponsoring Brookfield
students to showcase their talents in Odyssey of the Mind.
Maura, a sixth grade student, belongs to the National
Academy Soccer Training, which is part of the USA Soccer League.
Maura competed in the under 12-year old girls Northern California
division and has won a place to play in the All Star Soccer tournaments
in San Diego in March. Congratulations, Maura! Your soccer team
is fortunate to have you!
