BROOKFIELD NEWS
Term Two 2002-03
Dear Students, Parents/Guardians:
Winter has descended! Thanks go to Patty and Andrew
Owyoung for coordinating the purchasing and disseminating of Brookfield
sweatshirts and fleece jackets. With the colder weather, the warm
clothing is appreciated. Please make sure your child's name is on
all outerwear so we can return any lost apparel. Thanks so much.
For parents who are interested in having their child
attend Brookfield's Pre-First class for the 2003-'04 school year,
please request an application from the office. After applications
are received, Mrs. Schumacher will call to arrange for an assessment.
Siblings of current Brookfield students will have priority in being
assessed. Testing will begin in January.
The Girl Scout Troop 706 and the Brookfield Student
Council appreciated the donations of old, used towels for the SPCA.
The towels are used to dry animals and line cages. Due to our families'
generosity, 272 towels were collected! All Brookfield students have
earned a free dress day, which will be Tuesday, November 26. Although
uniforms do not need to be worn, appropriate clothing is still required
whenever there is a free dress day. Socks still must be visible,
at least as high as the highest part of the shoe. Shorts and skirts
must still be at least as long as the length of the fingertips when
hands are at the side. Therefore, items such as baggy pants, wornout
garments that have holes or are faded are not allowed. Your cooperation
is appreciated.
We had a great time seeing different costumes on Heritage
Day, November 14. Thank you Mrs. Darwish for coordinating this event!
Students changed into costumes at noon, and the student body tried
to guess the heritage of the clothing that was worn. It was fabulous
to see beautiful clothes that represent many different nations in
the world. Appreciation goes to Mrs. Darwish and Mrs. Robin Wong
for having their cameras to capture some great pictures for the
yearbook.
A big thank you goes to Mrs. Jeri Michelson who is
in charge of the Scholastic Book Fair. She and our wonderful parent
volunteers will be in the Social Hall November 20 - 22 assisting
our students with their book selections. Mrs. Michelson and the
Scholastic Book Fair team worked late November 19 setting up the
displays. This is such a great opportunity for our students to be
able to select books here at the school. Parents are also welcome
to browse and purchase books.
We have completed the second term and some students
still need to have their school books covered. Please make sure
all school texts have a cover on them. The covers will help keep
the books in good condition and add to their value when we have
the end of the year textbook sale. Thank you.
After the winter break, Mrs. DeMarco will no longer
be at Brookfield. Shortly after moving from Silicon Valley to Sacramento,
her husband lost his job with a high tech firm. They will be moving
to Chicago where there are more high tech industry firms than in
Sacramento. They will also be living closer to both sets of parents.
Interviews will be taking place to find a great teacher that will
meet Brookfield students' needs. We wish Mrs. DeMarco the best.
Our student council officers are spearheading spirit
among our students! A mascot contest will be held November 18-25.
We will still retain the "Lamp of Learning" as the school's logo.
Students have the option to draw or create a mascot. However, everyone
who submits a mascot idea must briefly describe why it would
be a good mascot for our school. Student Council thought having
students write the reason why a particular a mascot would be unique
for Brookfield would be a way for students to show off their creative
talents, as well as rouse up school spirit. All ideas must be submitted
by Monday morning, November 25. Student Council will then put the
top five entries on a voting ballot. Following the voting for a
mascot on November 26, a creative school jingles activity will be
held. Deadline to submit the jingle will be December 9. Students
will be able to state their jingle to the student body on one of
the next three days. In addition to these winter spirit activities,
there will be the traditional "Operation Cratchit" project in which
students may bring in non-perishable food items for Stanford Settlement
Home. All students who contribute a canned food towards helping
families who are in need will be able to participate in Brookfield's
"Wild and Crazy" dress day on Friday, December 20. Students can
come to school dressed in crazy, mixed-up clothing or dressed in
a costume.
This term's MegaSkill was Responsibility. Each week,
one of our student council officers states his/her thoughts about
the MegaSkill to the entire student body over the intercom system.
Here are some writings by two of our student council officers:
The MegaSkill for this month is responsibility. As
a Brookfield student, you are responsible for things such as coming
to school on time, turning in a completed homework assignment, and
showing respect to your school, teacher, and fellow classmates.
These are just some of the ways you can be responsible. Other ways
to show responsibility would be keeping a promise and following
through on a task. For example, at the end of lunch, everyone can
be responsible by picking up the litter around them and throwing
it away in the trash bins. By trying to be responsible now, it can
later become a part of our character.
By Sonja
Responsibility is a very important skill. You can
be responsible by doing your assignments soon after they are assigned,
but not in class unless you are given permission. Then you will
have more free time and have more fun. You can also be responsible
by doing your chores without your parents asking you to do them.
A couple of weeks ago, on Monday Night Football, Terrell Owens of
the 49ers did not show responsibility when he pulled a Sharpy pen
out of his sock, and signed the football and gave it to somebody
in the stands after he scored a touchdown. That somebody happened
to be his financial advisor. So remember kids, be responsible and
don't be like Terrell Owens.

We want to wish all our families a great Thanksgiving
Holiday. We are so fortunate to be living in the United States.
There are a myriad of things we have, just by living in America:
freedom, a democratic election system, choices in vocations, inspected
food, health care. This season, as we get together with loved ones
and good friends, we are especially cognizant of what makes life
meaningful. Here are some thoughts of our precious Pre-firsters
on being thankful.
I am thankful for my mom and dad and toys.
By Maddy
I am thankful for my baby bear and my puppy, Buddy.
That's a real dog. I'm also thankful for God and for being an American.
By Emily
I am thankful for the world and how God made us.
By Shelby
I am thankful for God and the angels.
By Madison
I am thankful that I can shoot a basketball in the
high hoop.

There are many December activities coming up.
Wednesday, December 4 is picture make-up day. Retakes will only
be for students who were absent on picture day on October 23 or
for those students whose pictures did not turn out well. If a student
is doing a "retake," please remember to bring back the Oct. 23 picture
packet.
On Thursday, December 12 at 7:00 the string and band
winter concert will be held in the social hall. It's been great
to hear the progress of our talented instrumentalists!
On Friday, December 13, at 1:15 in the multi, 6th
