Honor Code
The academic and social conduct of all students at Brookfield is governed by an Honor Code. It is the responsibility of the student to comply with the rules of the school, to pursue the prescribed course of study, to respect and respond to the authority of the teachers and other school personnel, to arrive at school on time and attend all assigned classes daily, to be alert and to respect the rights and property of others.Cheating, plagiarism, or other forms of academic dishonesty; stealing, possession or sale of stolen goods; lying or any other form of dishonesty will not be tolerated. It is expected that all students are responsible for their own actions and consequences. They should work diligently in an environment of mutual trust and respect. All students are expected to abide by the standards of conduct of the school.

Basic Brookfield School Rules
The underlying philosophies behind basic school rules are:
1. Students will assist teachers in promoting a teaching environment so that all students can learn. (No child will keep others from learning or the teacher from teaching).
2. All children will be considerate to self, to others and to property.

A. BE KIND
1. Be Courteous!
2. Be safe, kind and respectful to yourself and others: treat all possessions and property with respect; stay out of other students' desks and personal property.
3. Express feelings and emotions in an appropriate manner. Avoid spreading rumors and gossiping. Profanity, name-calling or teasing are not tolerated at any time.
B. BE SAFE:
1. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
2. Do not leave the playground area during break or lunch without permission from yard duty teacher.
3. Use the restrooms during break and lunch rather than during class time. No playing in or about the bathrooms.
4. Students are not allowed in the classrooms without supervision. A teacher, aide, or supervisor must be in the room.
5. Safe and proper use of the playground equipment is to be exercised at all times.
6. Sticks, knives, firearms, toy guns, pointed objects or other harmful objects, alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs are not permitted on the school grounds. Possession of any dangerous items or drug will result in suspension or expulsion.
7. Students should always walk and not run in the halls.
8. Students should not climb on the poles
9. Students should NEVER be on the hill along the freeway. There are several unmarked hazards and it is unsafe. Students should not climb on or over the fence.
10. If balls go over the fence, the student should report it to the teacher on duty.

C. BE PRODUCTIVE
1. Follow directions the first time.
2. Students are expected to arrive in homerooms by 9:00 each morning, prepared for class with all necessary materials (including homework, lunch, paper, pen or pencils). Do not come to school more than 15 minutes before your assigned activity.
3. When the bell rings, students will stop play, return jump ropes to the appropriate place, and go immediately to designated areas.

D. GENERAL CONDUCT
1. Be in proper school uniform at required times. Refer to Dress Code Policy.
2. No gum chewing or gum in possession at any time.
3. Student's personal items (Skateboards, rollerblades, electronic games, Walkman, radios, cellular phones, trading cards, money, yo yo's, toys, baseball bats, softballs, basketballs, golf balls, tennis balls, or other sports equipment, etc.) should remain at home to avoid damage or loss (unless specific permission is given by the teacher). This list is not all-inclusive and serves as a guideline. The only exceptions permitted are small games or toys brought to play with in the Early/Late after school care program. If they are a nuisance during regular school hours, they may be confiscated.
4. All students must pay for damaged or lost property (both school and personal).
5. Students are not permitted to sell things at school. Anything brought by students to be sold at school will be confiscated.
6. Remember and follow all other rules important enough to be stated by your teacher or the Director during the school year.

School Wide Discipline Procedures
1. Teachers maintain class rules and consequences, utilizing positive classroom management techniques. Teachers will communicate rules and consequences to parents and students.
2. School rules are discussed, explained and sent home for a parent's signature.
3. The administrator's role is to serve as a "back-up". The Director will be responsible to deal with: Continued/continual classroom disruptions. Behaviors that may require a demerit or suspension. It is important to realize that before a student is referred to the administrator, unless it is a severe problem, the teacher has often provided a warning(s), counseling, and classroom consequences to the student regarding the misbehavior.

Discipline Reports
Discipline Reports are issued to students when one's conduct becomes disruptive to providing a positive learning environment. The receipt of a Discipline Report is recorded on one's report card. Behaviors which warrant a Discipline Report include, but are not limited to:
_ Having an uncooperative attitude; disregarding the direction of an adult
_ Being dishonest or disrespectful
_ Bothering others: pushing, hurting another student, fighting
_ Having dangerous items at school
_ Being habitually tardy
_ Being continuously unprepared
_ Doing unacceptable work
_ Disrupting class by making a mess, not listening, wasting time, being out of one's seat repeatedly
_ Repeating dress code violations
_ Having playground problems
_ Using unacceptable language or swearing
_ Committing vandalism
_ Behaving, whether inside or outside the school, that is detrimental to the reputation of students or the School.

Demerits
The receipt of a Demerit is the most severe disciplinary measure administered by the School. The demerit is recorded on the student's report card. A student who receives more than one demerit may be placed on suspension or could be expelled from school. The following could warrant a Demerit or depending on the severity, suspension or expulsion from Brookfield without the possibility of readmission:
_ Failing to uphold the Honor Code
_ Willfully causing physical injury to another person.
_ Using, possessing or distributing any narcotic, drug or drug related products at any time is considered to be a very serious offense whether this action takes place on or off campus.
_ Committing an obscene act or engaging in habitual profanity or vulgarity.
_ Repeatedly disrupting school activities or otherwise defying the valid authority of teachers, administrator, or other school personnel.
_ Engaging in sexual harassment, as defined in Education Code section 21215, against school personnel or other pupils. The conduct must be considered by a reasonable person of the same gender as the victim to be sufficiently severe or pervasive (1) to have a negative impact on the victim's academic performance, or (2) create an intimidating hostile or offensive educational environment.
_ Possessing selling or furnishing any firearm, knife, explosive or other dangerous object. This also includes imitation weapons, i.e. replica that leads a reasonable person to conclude replica is a firearm.
_ Deliberately violating the fire code, including more specifically vandalism, and setting off false alarms.

Results for Following School Rules and Standards
_ A safe, positive, and happy learning environment where all may learn and enjoy themselves.
_ Encouragement and support from teachers, peers, and support personnel
_ Positive self esteem.

Discipline Consequences (Not necessarily in this order)
_ A verbal warning
_ Natural or logical consequence and or time-out
_ Completion of a Behavior Packet
_ A letter or telephone contact with the parent
_ Teacher-parent-student conference
_ Teacher-parent-student-director conference
_ Suspension. May be in-house or out of school. (Followed by an administrator's meeting with parents and student before readmission)
_ Probation
_ Expulsion A student's lunch break or nutritional break may be used for disciplinary purposes, such as work duty, trash pickup, etc. Corporal punishment is not within our discipline procedures. Suspension, probation, and expulsion are the exclusive decisions of the Administrator. Note: For major infractions, suspension may be given without warning. Policy Governing handling of Slurs. It is the policy of Brookfield School that individuals shall not use any racial, ethnic, religious, handicapped, or sexual slur, which demeans others or causes a disruption of the education process. Violation of this policy will be considered willful defiance of the valid authority of supervisors, teachers, or administrators. The reason for this policy is to prevent children from adopting negative values harmful to the precepts of freedom and quality - the primary goals of education in a democracy.

Playing and Rules for Nutrition Break
Safety comes first! During break:
_ Students should use the rest room, eat a nutritious snack, and get some fresh air.
_ Students may play jump rope, as long as ropes are used for jump rope games. Jump ropes are not to be used as snakes, or waved in the air. At the end of break, all jump ropes should be put in the jump rope box. No other P.E. equipment is to be used other than the jump ropes.
_ Break time is not a time to play tag, or any other running games.
_ Games involving tackling, pushing, tripping, etc. are not allowed on the playground anywhere at anytime.
_ Keep sand area free of games. No students should be around the play structure or sandbox.
_ Students should not stand on the benches, or on the ledge of the blacktop area.
_ Students are to remain on the blacktop pavement on the south side of the building only. Exceptions: the boys are to use the walkway on the East Side of the building to access the rest room. Seventh and eighth graders may stay on the sidewalk by their classrooms.
_ Students are not permitted to access anyone's lunch box other than their own under any circumstances. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES is anyone to be on the playground, on the playground equipment, skating, playing basketball or any other similar activity before 9:00 a.m. or after 3:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 1:00 p.m. on Fridays, unless participating in a school sponsored activity.
